MATH/CS ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Name: David DeMarchis
Class: 1993
Degree: B.S. Computer and Mathematical Sciences
Favorite LSSU class: Any and all of my mathematics classes have been the most important to me. Professor's Mickewich and Arbic in particular offered courses that got me ready for graduate work in Mathematics. There style and methods of teaching have crept into the way I teach my students.
Further education: MS in Mathematics - Miami of Ohio University
What I have done since LSSU: When I gratuated from LSSU in 1993, I immediately went to Miami of Ohio and earned my Master's degree in Mathematics. I then worked in Chicago for about 6 months doing computer programming but really missed academia. I therefore enrolled in Western Michigan University's PhD program in Mathematics and did three years of academic work there, all the while teaching one course per semester. I loved teaching that one course each semester and decided to leave WMU to become a full-time Mathematics teacher.
Employment: I currently am a Mathematics teacher at Canterbury High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I've been teaching at Canterbury for the last 10 years. Canterbury is a small, Non-denominational K-12 Independent School. I usually teach Advanced Placement Calculus, Advanced Placement Statistics, and Geometry. My average class size is only 15 students. I also serve as the Class Dean of the 11th grade students.
Hobbies: My family and I are still big followers of Laker Hockey. Living in Fort Wayne, Indiana makes it difficult to attend home games, but most away games are only a couple hours away from us. I also enjoy running, working out, and playing in-line hockey.
Best advice I have received: I'm not sure this would classify as "advice", but it was something that my former LSSU professor (Tom Mickewich) once told me when I spoke to him about possibly going in to teaching. He told me "...you may never be rich, but there are other, more important rewards..." He was right.
Advice I would give: Enjoy your time up there and learn everything you possibly can from your professors. They are there to help and will prepare you well for whatever you choose to do upon graduation. Also, support Laker Hockey! Go to the home games and cheer on the team...whether the Lakers are ranked first or last in the country!
We need you!
The Mathematics and Computer Science Department is featuring alumni from its programs. The idea is for mathematics and computer science alumni to share what they have been up to since graduation. In order to make this work, we need alumni to participate. It doesn't matter if it was just a year ago or if you're a graduate from many decades back, we hope you will take part in this feature. If you graduated from the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, simply fill out the form here. Thanks.
